Winner: Dr Maggy Lord

Having earned an impressive list of career achievements in science from a very young age, it’s no surprise Dr Maggy Lord has gone on to become a well-regarded and high achieving academic at the University of Queensland.

Dr Lord is being recognised as co-founder of the Mshauri (m-sh-a-rhi) STEM mentorship program, the only Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) mentorship program in the country focused on supporting students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

She is an inspiring role model and mentor for young students, drawing on her extensive skills and experience to motivate and support them to pursue careers in STEM.

Fahima Ahmadi

Fahima Ahmadi is a dedicated young Hazara woman with strong links to the Afghan community. After arriving in 2019, Fahima has achieved great success and been a role model for other young refugees, including as school captain of Stretton State College. An active volunteer and advocate for inclusive support services, she has helped dozens of newly arrived refugees settle in Queensland by providing advice and assistance, including helping families to enroll children into local schools.

Sarah Whitaker

As a volunteer with Southport State School Parents and Citizen’s Association, Sarah Whitaker goes above and beyond to support parents from diverse cultural backgrounds to fully participate in school and community life.

Her work with the Multicultural Families Organisation to start an English Hub for non-English speaking parents has achieved great success including increasing volunteering at the school, increased participation at Parent Teacher meetings, and greater connection to other community services.
