Great Keppel Island Rejuvenation Project

Funding is being used to deliver a number of common user infrastructure projects that will stimulate tourism on the island.

Common user infrastructure projects were identified following investigations into infrastructure options and priorisation by stakeholders as part of the Great Keppel Island (Woppa) Concept Master Plan. The plan was released on 23 April 2024.

The Department of Tourism and Sport is working closely with a number of delivery partners to progress delivery of these important infrastructure projects.

The Queensland Government and Livingstone Shire Council have signed a funding agreement under which the council will deliver planned upgrades including:

  • a gateway precinct proposed to feature a visitor centre, arrival plaza with green space, amenities, yarning circle and landscaping
  • improvements to walking tracks to provide better access around Fisherman’s Beach
  • wayfinding signage that incorporates Woppaburra heritage and culture on the western side of the island to provide safe navigation.

With investment by the Queensland Government, Livingstone Shire Council is also delivering a new wastewater treatment plant and amenities for the island.

Maritime Safety Queensland is currently undertaking technical studies to improve maritime access to the island.

Future plans also include a feasibility study for a Woppaburra Cultural Centre.

The former lease areas on Great Keppel Island are being managed by the Department of Resources following their forfeiture in April 2023. Read more on the former lease areas.
